There is good news for people who often book flight tickets from the eastern region of India. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has recently announced that Biju Patnaik Airport, located in Bhubaneswar, has been granted international status. This airport is equipped with an all new domestic terminal, which can handle nearly 400 departing as well as arriving fliers at any instant. Spread over an area of more than 18000 square metres, it offers elevators, escalators, in-line baggage handling system and digital display of flight status. Apart from these facilities, closed-circuit TV cameras are installed to take care of the security measures.
GoAir willing to Initiate Services
A number of international as well as global carriers have shown interest to offer services from this new terminal at Bhubaneswar. Among the popular global names are SilkAir and Air Arabia. Indian low-cost carrier (LCC) GoAir has also shown its interest in operating from this airport. This airline is ready to start its services from this terminal after the state government reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 20 to five per cent. Passengers would see an additional destination in the Go Air flight status from April if it starts operating to Bhubaneswar.
This popular Wadia-group aviation foray has recently seen a growth of almost 25 per cent in passenger traffic during November last year. This was mainly because of its tactic of increasing the seat capacity in its aircraft. Apart from this, there was more good news for the LCC as it posted a profit of more than 100 crore INR in the running financial year as compared to an annual loss of more than 130 crore INR in the previous. All these positive reports combined with the expected increase in the number of destinations in the Go Air flight schedule is surely making its officials hope for a bright future ahead.
