Temple of Zeus – Location and History
Located in Olympia, this temple is devoted to Zeus and is a fine example of Doric architecture. The construction of this temple was started around 470 BC and completed before 456 BC. Built from remains of the Triphylian war, this impressive structure was designed by Libon of Elis.
The temple has a total of 104 columns, each 17 m long and made out of Pentelic marble. Towards the east of the temple is its pediment, which is attributed to the Pausanians. The west pediment depicts Centauromachy, which was a battle at the wedding of Pirithous between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. Sculptures inside this temple are an excellent representation of the Severe sculpture style.
In 426 AD, people of the Theodosius order burnt this temple, and later excavations at the temple site were done by the French in 1829. Important collections of this temple have been preserved in the Olympia Archaeological Museum while excavations made by the French are restored in the Louvre.
