In a bid to expand its operations, IndiGo Airlines will now start its services in the capital city of Jharkhand – Ranchi. This decision was made by the airline after the civil aviation division of the Jharkhand government announced that it would lower the sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from 20% to 4% in the state, earlier in the month of March. The airline had applied to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to start its services in Ranchi, in the first week of June. The application has been approved by AAI. Currently, IndiGo is making arrangements to initiate its services in the city and plans to start air ticket booking to and from here soon.
IndiGo Airlines plan to start its operations in Ranchi is seen as a welcome move by the locals. According to the director of the Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi, this move by IndiGo will encourage more airlines to start their operations in the city. Presently, Air India, Jet Airways and GoAir connect Ranchi to Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi. According to airport sources, IndiGo airlines is likely to launch its service on the Ranchi-Mumbai route in August first week. The other routes are likely to be Ranchi-Kolkata and Ranchi-Delhi. However, the airline has sent no official communication regarding the destinations to the AAI.
The airline has been allotted enough space inside the new terminal area of the Ranchi Airport. Work has been started by the airline to establish its ticket and check in counters, besides other facilities in the airport. Once the work is over, it might start its flight ticket booking service from the airport itself. Till that time, passengers interested in purchasing flight tickets to Ranchi or from Ranchi with IndiGo airlines can do it online with leading travel websites.
