Rules of Indigo Airlines flight cancellation, delay and rescheduling

It is not surprising to find that even the most efficient airlines have to face the prospects of flight delays, reschedules and cancellations due to circumstances which may or may not be in their control. For this reason, all the airlines have a pre-defined policy on this matter to the benefit of both the customers and the employees of the airlines dealing with this matter. IndiGo Airlines, the premier airline of India in terms of market share and a proven track record of flying punctually, also has a pre-defined policy on cancellations, delays and rescheduling of the cheap flights.

For the benefit of the passengers, the crux of these policy elements is provided below:

  1. You are required to provide the correct contact details at the time of doing IndiGo flight booking. The telephone number has to be SMS compatible (means that you shall ideally provide the mobile number, rather than a landline) so that the airline can send you the advance notification of the delay, reschedule or cancellation of flight. Mind you, if the contact details are not correct, the airline clearly mentions that you will not be eligible for the compensation (which will be granted as per the DGCA rules).
  2. Customers have to be patient for 2 to 3 hours. They just cannot seek compensation if the flight gets delayed for a period up to 2 to 3 hours. This means that you cannot hold the airline liable and seek compensation if it gets delayed by, say half an hour. The policy of compensation for delay, reschedule and refund is applicable in case the flights are delayed for more than 2 to 3 hours.
  3. After a period of 2 to 3 hours, the customers have three options:
    1. Seek refunds.
    2. Seek credit for future travel.
    3. Rebook on alternative flights, subject to availability of flights and seats.
    4. 4.    IndiGo Airlines policy also clearly mentions the rules which will be applicable in case the customer is in transit and the subsequent flight has to be cancelled. In such a situation, the customer has two options, either to remain at the same transit station or to decide on returning from the transit station. This is explained below:
      1. While remaining at the transit station, the customer:
        1. Can rebook alternative flight of IndiGo without paying any extra charges. However, this is subject to the availability of the alternative flight and the seat in it.
        2. Can seek partial refund for the cancelled leg of journey.
  4. However, if the customer decides to return to the point of origin, he:
    1. Can receive the refunds
    2. Seek credit for future travel on IndiGo Airlines.
    3. Rebook on alternative IndiGo flight at no additional cost.
